AGENDA

Phorum 2020 Key Themes:

  • Connectivity – The Shift to a 5G World
It would be easy, but wrong, to think of 5G as a major jump in data capacity from 4G. What’s more important is the change from a connective tissue among pockets of computing, to a global computing fabric in which the things we used to do with networks are now software-defined behaviors: we’ll be able to tune systems for the low data latency, high data integrity, and other key characteristics needed to move “an Internet of shopping” to a global platform of production, transportation and notification.
  • Privacy – Living in a Privacy Conscious World
The paradox of a connected world is the desire for personalized experience, combined with the growing understanding that insightful algorithms can find personal things in data even when it was thought to be safely anonymized. Massive regulatory disruption from GDPR, CCPA, and the kind of forced transparency seen in the Algorithmic Accountability Act now making its way through Congress, require rigorous scrutiny and thoughtful consideration not so much of “big data” but of carefully limited and governed data collection and use.
  • Ethical Data – The Ethical Use of AI
It’s increasingly apparent that there are runaway loops of positive feedback in many naïve deployments of machine-learning techniques: for example, raising police presence in high-crime areas, increasing their arrest rates and driving still greater concentration of law enforcement in what are often low-income neighborhoods of color. Including ethical and humane considerations, up front, in the development of AI initiatives can enable precautionary “circuit breakers” and other measures that increase acceptance, adoption, and value as well as avoiding embarrassing and costly missteps.
  • Demographic Change: Predicted Effects of Shifts in Generational Population Distribution on Investment in Human Capital, Infrastructure, Technology, etc.
The shift to a population of roughly equal presence in every five-year age band, from early childhood to mid-60s, is “a future that’s already happened” given the inexorable mathematics of lengthening life span and shrinking family size. There are no precedents for employment, health care, education and other critical components of a dynamic economy and a just society in this novel but absolutely foreseeable environment. A 5G world of distributed assistance to the elderly, personalized but private delivery of telemedicine to make health care scalable, and other strategic efforts must receive urgent attention — on a schedule not subject to postponement.

HeavyWater built a transactional AI platform (AIVA), to automate manual processes in the financial industry. AIVA’s first application is in the mortgage industry: automating loan production from mortgage intake to processing to servicing. Compared to competitive robotic process automation (RPA) tools, AIVA is 2x+ more accurate and an investment in a platform for automating future, higher value job functions (i.e., beyond repetitive and redundant tasks). Today, AIVA is in production, automating processes for 1M+ loans across: (a) mortgage intake (top 3 credit bureau), (b) mortgage processing (several leading originators) and (c) mortgage servicing ($20B insurance broker/advisor). In the future, HeavyWater aims to leverage the data we are processing to train AIVA to automate across the mortgage production value chain, including high-level cognitive functions that today ‘require’ human judgment – ultimately creating a “black box” that can run an entire back-end mortgage process with little-to-no manual intervention.
