Honoring John Martinson for Lifetime Achievement at 23rd Annual Enterprise Awards

John Martinson has been a venture capitalist and software industry leader for the past 38 years. He is the founder and General Partner of Edison Venture Fund, a growth equity firm that focuses on technology-enabled solutions in the eastern United States. Since its inception in 1986, John led Edison to finance more companies in NJ, PA, NY, MD and VA than any other private equity firm—resulting in seven partnerships totaling $730 million, 175 company investments, and 110 successful company exits. John is also the primary investor of 27 early stage companies and 20 private equity partnerships.

John is active on a number of boards and has led many industry associations. He served as a member of the Board of Directors for sixty-eight separate companies, and was a director of five trade associations and eight non-profit organizations. He was Chairman of the National Venture Capital Association and Chairman of the Greater Philadelphia Venture Group—a leading venture trade group later known as the MAC Alliance, which merged with the Eastern Technology Council in 2010 to create PACT. John also co-founded and chaired The New Jersey Technology Council, the Mid-Atlantic Venture Fair, and the New Jersey Venture Fair.

An avid philanthropist, John fueled that passion by establishing the Martinson Family Foundation. The foundation is known for making grants for educational and other charitable programs, specifically K-12 education facilities. These grants support education initiatives that encourage math, science, technology and engineering teachers to advance their knowledge and skills through collaborative programs at nearby colleges and universities.

John’s accomplishments throughout his career granted him various prestigious awards. He was inducted into the NJBIZ Hall of Fame and received the NVCA Services Award for contributions to the venture capital industry on a national level. The Greater Philadelphia Venture Group presented the Blair Thompson award to recognize John’s lifetime and capital achievements. He was the first recipient of the New Jersey Institute of Technology Entrepreneur Award and was also honored by Ernst & Young as NJ Entrepreneur of the Year Lifetime Achievement.

John earned a BS in aeronautical engineering at the Air Force Academy, and later joined the Air Force as an officer. He flew more than 500 combat missions over North Vietnam earning him the Distinguished Flying Cross. Upon returning from Vietnam, John attended Purdue University and earned a MS in Astronautics, followed by an MBA Beta Gamma Sigma from Southern Illinois University. He also received Honorary Doctorates from Rider, Rowan, and Thomas Edison Universities, was selected as 18th Distinguished Graduate of the Air Force Academy. In 2011, John was inducted into SIU’s Alumni Hall of Fame, and received Purdue’s Pinnacle Award for supporting engineering education programs at the university.
